Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML)
is a fast-growing cancer of the blood and bone marrow. In AML, the bone marrow makes many unformed cells called blasts. Blasts normally develop into white blood cells that fight infection. However, the blasts are abnormal in AML. They do not develop and cannot fight infections. The bone marrow may also make abnormal red blood cells and platelets. The number of abnormal cells (or leukemia cells) grows quickly. They crowd out the normal red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets the body needs.

Day 1

Tuesday.  We pick Riley up from school.  I look at him and notice how pale he is.  Vince and I are nervous.  Dr. Roberts suggests that we don't tell Riley until they have confirmed the diagnosis.  Hopefully there was a horrible mistake at their lab.  We don't want to hide it from him, but also don't want to scare him if there has been a mistake. We do tell him that his other blood test didn't look good, and we needed to do it again.  We get to UMC and find our way to the 3rd floor to take another blood test.  They had a hard time finding a good vein.  Riley was very dehydrated from the last few days.  The 3rd attempt finally was successful.  We wait around for awhile...  Finally we get the news that we were dreading.  Riley does have leukemia.  Dr. Lisa Kopp is our oncologist and she is great.  She explains everything so well and with such compassion.  Riley handles it with such strength.  Although a hit to us all, we do feel some sort of relief in knowing what is going on and that they can help Riley.

They admit Riley and tell us about all the tests they need to run.   CT scan, and a chest x-ray for starters.  Also he would need a transfusion of platelets so he would be ok to have surgery the next day.  Tomorrow will be a big day.

At this point we are just holding tight.  Hanging on.  Being brave.  It is all we can do.

Initial lab resuts:
White blood cells: 1.1 (normal 4.5 - 13.5)
Red Blood cells: 9.6 (normal 13.5 - 17.5)
Platelets: 16 (normal 150 - 425)  (one bag transfused)
ANC: 275 ( < 500 = severely neutropenic)
Blasts:  10
